How Garage Door Cables Work
Most residential garage doors use a torsion spring system. Two lift cables run from brackets at the bottom corners of the door, up and around cable drums mounted on the torsion spring shaft above the door. As the torsion spring winds and unwinds, it rotates the drums, which spool and unspool the cables to raise and lower the door. In both torsion and extension spring systems, the cables are under tension whenever the springs are wound - which includes when the door is closed.
Signs Your Cable Needs Attention
- Door drops unevenly - if one side drops faster than the other or the door appears to hang at an angle, a cable has likely snapped or come off the drum.
- Visible fraying - cables are made from multiple strands of steel wire. Individual strands can break and appear as fraying on the cable surface. A fraying cable is close to failure.
- Slack or loose cable - a cable hanging loose, coiled on the floor, or lying off the drum means it has snapped or unwound. Do not operate the door.
- Door will not open - a snapped cable removes counterbalance on one side. The opener will struggle and the door will feel extremely heavy manually.
- Grinding or scraping noise - a cable partially unwound from the drum can catch on the drum or tracks during operation.
Why Cables Fail
- Wear and fatigue - cables flex thousands of times over their service life. Metal fatigue is normal, particularly at the point of attachment to the bottom bracket and where the cable wraps the drum.
