Insulated Garage Doors: Are They Worth the Cost?
If you are replacing your garage door, you will quickly find that insulated doors cost more than non-insulated ones. For a standard double door, you are typically looking at an additional $200 to $600 depending on insulation type and R-value.
For most homeowners in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and the wider Hampton Roads area, that additional cost is worth it. Here is why - and when it might not be necessary.
Why Insulation Matters in Hampton Roads
The Hampton Roads climate is tough on garages. Summers are hot and humid, regularly reaching the low to mid 90s. Winters are mild but unpredictable, with cold snaps below freezing. The coastal location brings salt air, high humidity year round, and periodic tropical storms.
For any garage attached to a living space, an uninsulated door is effectively a large hole in your home thermal envelope. Heat pours in during summer and escapes in winter. An insulated door significantly reduces this heat transfer, keeping the garage - and adjacent rooms - more comfortable while reducing the load on your HVAC system.
Understanding R-Value
Insulation is measured by R-value - the higher the number, the better the thermal resistance.
- Non-insulated (R-0) - single-layer steel or aluminium. No thermal resistance. Suitable for detached garages with no living space above or adjacent.
- R-6 to R-9 - polystyrene foam board sandwiched between two steel layers. A significant improvement. Good entry-level insulation for attached garages.
- R-13 to R-18 - polyurethane foam injected between the steel layers. Bonds to the steel, adds structural rigidity, and provides superior thermal resistance. The best choice for an attached garage in the Hampton Roads climate.
For most attached garages in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, we recommend a minimum R-13 polyurethane-insulated door.
Benefits Beyond Temperature
- Noise reduction - an insulated door is significantly quieter in operation and reduces external noise transmission. Important if the garage adjoins a bedroom or home office.
- Structural strength - polyurethane-insulated doors are stronger and more dent-resistant than non-insulated doors. The foam bonds the skins together and adds rigidity.
- Moisture resistance - insulated doors resist condensation on the interior surface, reducing rust risk in coastal environments.
- Energy savings - an attached garage that is 10 to 15 degrees closer to ambient temperature year round reduces HVAC load on adjacent living spaces. Payback period in the Hampton Roads climate is typically three to seven years.
When Insulation Is Not Necessary
If your garage is fully detached from the house with no living space above it, and is used only for vehicle storage, a non-insulated door is a practical and cost-effective choice. The thermal performance of the door has no impact on your home energy efficiency in this scenario.
