Garage Door Panel Replacement

A backed-in bumper, a stray basketball, a fallen limb in a storm. Garage door panels take plenty of abuse, and the damage is on show to the whole street. The good news is that a damaged door does not always mean a whole new door. Sectional garage doors are built from separate horizontal sections, and in many cases a single section can be swapped out.

Replacing one section is usually the right call when:

• Only one or two sections are damaged.
• The door is a current model and matching sections are still made.
• The tracks, springs, and remaining sections are in good condition.
• The door is not badly faded, so the new section will blend in.

A new door is usually the better value when:

• Three or more sections are damaged.
• The model is discontinued and no matching section exists.
• The door has faded and a new section would stand out.
• There is rust, rot, or delamination elsewhere on the door.
• The cost of new sections approaches half the price of a new door.
• The door is uninsulated or near the end of its life anyway.

A dented panel is more than a cosmetic problem. Each section adds stiffness to the whole door. A creased or cracked section flexes every time the door moves, which loosens hinges, stresses rollers and tracks, and makes the opener work harder. In high wind, a weakened section is the first place a door will fold.

Damage to the bottom section needs particular care. The bottom brackets that anchor the lift cables are bolted to it, and those cables are under spring tension. If the bottom section is cracked near a bracket, stop using the door and call for garage door repair.

• Identify the door - we record the manufacturer, model, size, color, panel style, and insulation type from the label on the door.
• Order the match - sections are ordered to that specification. Lead time varies by manufacturer.
• Secure the door - if the damage is severe, we make the door safe or brace it while the part is on order.
• Swap the section - spring tension is released safely, the damaged section is removed, and hinges, rollers, struts, and brackets are transferred or renewed.
• Rebalance and test - spring tension, balance, opener limits, and the safety reversal are all checked.

A panel swap is not a safe DIY job. It involves the spring system, and a section that is slightly out of square will bind the whole door.

Can a dented panel be repaired instead of replaced? Small dents in steel can sometimes be improved, but a creased section has lost strength and usually needs replacing.

Will a new panel match my door? A new section matches the factory color. If your door has weathered, there may be a visible difference until the new section ages.

Can I use my door with a damaged panel? Only if it still travels smoothly and the damage is minor. If the door binds, sags, or the damage is near a bracket, leave it closed and call us.
